Myth #1 - If I have diabetes, I can't play sport
Not only is it ok to eat a sugary snack every now and again, it is recommended by Diabetes UK that diabetic sweets and chocolate should be avoided as they can still effect the blood's glucose levels and cause diarrhoea. As long as a healthy and balanced diet is followed, there is no reason why someone with diabetes shouldn't enjoy sugary snacks occasionally. Always consult a doctor if you're unsure.
2. As I have diabetes, I will eventually go blind
Again, this is untrue. Those with diabetes are no more likely to get a cold than someone without the condition. However, those with diabetes should get the flu jab because an infection like the flu can mess with the blood's glucose levels.
3. I cannot cut my own toenails if I have diabetes
Unfortunately, the leading cause of becoming blind in the UK is diabetes. However, this does not mean that having the condition will certainly lead to blindness. There are a few proven measures that can be taken to reduce the likelihood of becoming blind, including controlling sugar, glucose and blood fat levels, not smoking and keeping fit.
4. I cannot play sports if I have diabetes
Diabetes UK does not recommend the consumption of snacks such as diabetic chocolate or sweets as they can still affect the blood glucose levels and lead to diarrhoea. As long as a good balanced diet is followed, there is no reason why enjoying a small sugary snack every now and again shouldn't be allowed. Again, this should be discussed with your doctor first to make sure.
5. I'm more likely to get ill with a cold if I have diabetes
The correct and healthy way to cut your toenails applies to everyone. It is a misconception that those with diabetes shouldn't cut their own toenails, but as long as they are cut correctly (to the shape of the toe, not straight across, and not too short) those with diabetes can do it themselves.
