How To Avoid A Heart Attack

Every year, close to one million Americans die from heart disease, thus making this one of the most feared natural assassins. Everybody is susceptible to heart disease in varying ways and degrees. Your fitness level and what you eat plays a major role. Close to 65 million Americans suffer from heart disease, and, set your faces to stunned: a good forty percent of people who suffer a heart attack don't detect any symptoms. A heart attack may occur due to heart disease but not always and although it is the leading cause of death it can be prevented. Women usually are less prone to suffering from heart attacks, except for older ladies who have reached the menopause stage - this is when the chances of such would greatly increase.

So, really, what are those circumstances that lead to heart disease? The most commonly recognized risk factors are

Stress Smoking. High levels of LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) A lack of HDL cholesterol, also known as good cholesterol High blood pressure Obesity Diabetes Homocysteine, a particularly debilitating amino acid Heredity The heart is the most crucial organ to sustain life, and to keep it ticking efficiently, our priority should be to prevent its deterioration. You should have a Pledge of Allegiance to your heart, and that would be I solemnly swear to eat right, get some exercise and live healthy, so help me God! Just like "merry Christmas" this has been said many times in many ways, but it is a proven maxim that those who live by this credo live longer and healthier.

WARNING. Especially if you are on prescription or if you're taking over the counter medicines, make sure you check with your doctor or physician before going on any diet or exercise routine that might catch your fancy.

Here are just a few of the things you might want to do in order to ensure a healthier lifestyle - your doctor would probably advise you likewise:

Minimize the amount of fat and cholesterol in your diet

Make sure you check your blood pressure from time to time

Don't smoke (fortunately there are a lot of resources available for those wanting to quit).

Learn to meditate, this will lessen stress.

Exercise regularly. A sedentary lifestyle is an invitation for the Silent Assassin, the heart attack, to come pay you a visit.

Control your weight. If you're obese

If you have diabetes, control it

What are the symptoms of heart attacks?

NOTE. These symptoms may or may not indicate a heart attack. You should always seek the help of a medical professional because again, heart attacks can be a 'silent killer.'

The American Heart Association lists them as

A feeling of pressure in the chest, or a fullness, often a harrowing, torturous pain. Pain spreads to the shoulder, the neck and the arms. Specifically left sided neck and arm pain. A light, breezy feeling in the head, sometimes fainting. Deep, labored breathing with little exertion. Extreme sweating.

The first hour is very critical. Don't misconstrue this as a sudden urge to pass gas and stink up the room - this is no laughing (or stinking) matter! What you should do is call your doctor post-haste or call 911 - heck, your doctor would probably go, "you should've called 911 before giving me a ring, but thanks anyway!" Heart disease can be easily prevented it's just a matter of implementing a healthier lifestyle.
