Plantar fascia is the connective tissue that supports the longitudinal structure of the human body. It extends from the human toes and runs along the bottom of the foot attaching to the heel. This strong and elastic tissue keeps the bones together. Any small tear or rupture in this tissue affects the mobility of the person. In severe cases it also causes pain and suffering and has to be treated surgically.

Plantar fascia tear occurs due to simple reasons which are generally not very frequent. The weight of the human body and also the way of walking at times causes the toe to move upwards while the heel of the person is held in the place. In such a situation the plantar fascia tissue gets ripped as it is strong and this strength works against it.

If there is an impact from an object like a stone then this can lead to this injury. Sometimes while jumping or running you may land incorrectly on your feet and this can also damage the tissue. This ailment is not very rare and does affect quite a few people. Athletes are the most vulnerable to this injury. Damage to the tissue can cause swelling and bruising to the bottom of the foot. It can also lead to inflammation. This condition can be quite painful and you may feel a lot of pain in the heel and the arch of the foot.

The most effective way to treat a plantar fascia tear, which is not very uncommon is to give the foot plenty of rest. To help identify the extent of the injury, MRIs and X-Rays are used. Being overweight can sometimes also lead to this condition. This is why as a long term solution, doctors usually advise losing weight. This injury can take a minimum of 4 weeks to heal and the foot replaces the damaged cells with new ones.

Also medicines and steroids are prescribed to reduce severe pain. The orthopedic shoes or simple orthotics are also inserted in the shoes to provide comfort to the patient of plantar fascia tear. Surgery is the last resort and is not advisable until and unless other treatments are tried.

A plantar fascia tear can be very uncomfortable for the person who is suffering from it. A simple miss-step can cause this injury. Wearing the right shoes can help you avoid this injury completely. Exercising the foot and taking precautions can also help you keep your foot safe.
