I have run nine marathons so far in my life and each was an amazing experience in itself. However, none of the marathons We've run compares with the experience of running my first one. That it was one of those events in life you never forget. I would like to share with you that have and the life lessons I learned from that.
Years ago I created a list of the things i wanted to accomplish between my life. In my list were such things as traveling around the world, getting a pilot's license, building a marathon, and seeing the pyramids of Egypt. I squeeze list away and promptly forgot about it.
A short while ago my lady found my list and was surprised to know that I experienced a desire to chance a marathon. She stole my goal, trained for it and ran a marathon. I used to be totally amazed that they actually achieved it. In fact, I had been so impressed I told myself, if she can do it so can I. And I did.
Managing a marathon isn't any small thing. A marathon is 26.2 miles long or about 44,500 steps. To get a grasp of how far that distance happens to be, I suggest the next time you take a drive as part of your car to set your trip meter. Watch the miles tick off and once you get to 26.2 miles take into consideration running that distance. Again, it's no small task.
Owning a marathon is often a unique experience. It will be the only sports competition that we're aware of the spot that the greenest beginner can rub shoulders with and compete with the elite athletes around the globe. You don't find that in football, or basketball, or golf or other sport. However in a marathon, I became running with all the Kenyans!
To train properly for a marathon you need to begin nearly each year in advance. When I began my training I could not run two miles. But continuously, month after month, while using training and guidance from my sweet wife, we gradually accumulated our miles. Meaning running 2 or 3 miles per day for four days each week, resting on Fridays after which running a longer run using Saturday mornings.
