You may be taking Triamterene HCTZ because for one of several health conditions. This medication also goes by the names Dyazide or Maxzide. It contains two diuretic medications in one capsule and one should be aware of some things about these drugs before taking.

Diuretics are also referred to as water pills as they work to take water from your system. This can be effective for lowering blood pressure and relieving symptoms associated with edema or swelling. Diuretics take salt or sodium along with water, from the body.

You also may be told to follow a low sodium diet when taking water pills. This will increase the effectiveness of your medication. Eliminating table salt is not sufficient as there is lot of hidden sodium in many kinds of processed foods. When following a low salt diet, avoid canned soups, salty snacks, sauces, and processed meats. You may find many "low sodium" selections in your grocery store.

HCTZ stands for hydrochlorothiazide. This is an effective medication but it can deplete levels of potassium and magnesium. Triamterene is sometimes abbreviated as triam. It is a potassium sparing diuretic. When combined with hydrochlorothiazide it helps to keep potassium levels normal and makes up a potent diuretic combination. However, triam may cause the body to retain potassium.

When taking Dyazide one should be careful with salt substitute products. Many substitutes contain potassium chloride and excessive use may cause potassium levels to rise. Too much potassium can be bad for the body. It is also important to avoid potassium supplements.

When taking Triamterene HCTZ, you may wish to drink additional water. However, this will depend upon your condition. If you have kidney or urinary tract problems, consult your doctor before taking this medication. Inform your doctor if you are sensitive to sulfa drugs or have blood sugar problems, kidney disease, or gout. If you experience unusual symptoms such as excessive drowsiness or changed heartbeat with this medication, contact a medical professional.
